My husband has an obsession with corn dogs. He just can resist them! If we pass a place selling them, we must stop to get one (even though he will inevitably have an upset stomach after devouring one!). So, this past Christmas, my husband asked for a homemade corn dog (naturally!).
I was up for the challenge, but without a deep fryer, wasn’t sure what to do. After a few days of thinking, it came to me…they have a machine for everything nowadays! Whether you want to make cake pops or doughnuts or quesadillas, there’s a gadget out there for it. So, I searched online and came across this:
You can get the corn dog maker here.
It was my first corn dog ever. While I’m not a huge fan of hot dogs or corn bread, they were pretty good. The batter was relatively quick to make and the corn dogs didn’t take long at all to cook either. And, the best part was that my husband enjoyed them.
First, preheat your corn dog maker and coat it with nonstick cooking spray.
Then, make the batter…
- Add 1 egg to a large bowl.
- Beat the egg.
- Pour in 1/4 cup milk. (I used skim.)
- Add 1/4 cup cornmeal.
- Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
- Next, add 1/2 cup whole wheat flour.
- Finish the batter with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
- Mix the batter well with a whisk.
- Slice 3 hot dogs in half. (Depending on the brand you buy, you may need to cut them into smaller pieces.)
- Skewer each hot dog to make handles.
- Spoon some batter into each compartment of the corn dog maker. (It should be about 2/3 full.)
- Place a hot dog on top of the batter.
- Add some more batter to completely cover each dog.
- Close the corn dog maker tightly.
- Let cook for about 6-10 minutes. (The longer the cooking time, the crunchier they will be.)
Serve with ketchup (or whatever condiment you like). Enjoy!
